2007 Service Project - World Vision Aids Care Kits

This year, the conference wide service project will be making World Vision AIDS care kits. The contents are listed at the end of the post and in the PDF attached at the bottom of this post.  Feel free to print and redistribute it.  In addition, we're going to give a little quart zip lock bag of basic items to the hospital that Joan and Paul McClain used to work at (soap, wash cloth, three band aids, etc).  We will also make small foam crosses and key chains for missionaries to give.  We'll be taking them to John McCall in Taiwan, and sending them to Rachel Weller in Ethiopia.  You can read more about World Vision's AIDS Caregiver Kits on their website.

AIDS Caregiver Kit Contents:

  • 1 Large Petroleum Jelly (13 oz)  (A  HUGE JAR, two fists big - Look in the Baby Section)
  • 100 Count Disposable Latex Gloves (LATEX about $8 for 100. Two 50-Count boxes is fine.)
  • 1 Tube Antifungal Cream 1 - 2 oz size (Clotrimazole brand name is Lotrimin - the Target brand of Clotrimazole says “Jock Itch Relief”)
  • 1 Bag 200 Count Cotton Balls (100 or 200 count only. A bag of 300 means re-bagging!)
  • 3 Bars Antibacterial Soap (Antibacterial Dial, Irish Spring, Zest, Coast, Safeguard, etc. - You can get 8 bars - 12 for about $3 at WalMart.  Bringing extra bars is fine. We’ll use them all.)
  • 4 Colored Washcloths (We’ll use as many as you bring. Can get 12-18 for $3 - $4.)
  • 1 Loose-leaf Notebook (70 - 100 sheets)
  • 4 Pens (Click or Cap, doesn’t matter - About $1.50 for 10. We’ll use as many as you bring.)
  • 1 Flashlight with D Batteries (Decent brand cost $3 - $5. No Dollar Store flashlights. Target has a Rayovac $5.99 or two Energizers for $3.99  WalMart has EverReady 2 for $2.97)  * Don’t Forget the D Batteries *
  • 1 Sturdy Comb (A multi pack is great - we’ll use as many as you bring.)
  • $5 Cash for Shipping Costs

Adult delegates are invited to help throughout the week in the service project tasks.  While you are at the New Wilmington Presbyterian Church basement, we also ask that you write a prayer card or note of encouragement to accompany these kits.

This is the third year that New Wilmington Mission Conference has done a conference-wide service project.  The initial credit for getting the service idea started goes to those who planned the Jr. High Family BookStore Box Pack Event.  About 10,000 donated religious items (including inspirational books and Bibles) were unpack and repacked in order to be sent overseas to mission projects.  In 2005, we assembled approximately 850 Church World Service AIDS Health Care Kits - a huge feat.  In 2006, the conference completed 687 Church World Service Health Care Kits which had about 16 items per each gallon zip lock bag.
