Summer Service
A 60 Year Legacy
For over 60 years teams have traveled far and wide to many international locations, and some have also been called to serve within the United States. With a variety of itineraries and in cooperation with many different kinds of missions, Summer Service teams have found that following their service, their lives have never been the same.
What is Summer Service?
Summer Service is a scholarship opportunity for a select group of young adults to experience mission first hand. Each year a small group is chosen to spend 6 weeks experiencing a different culture and engaging in short term mission projects. This cost free initiative is one of the hallmark programs of NWMC.
“The trip was life-changing because God broke my heart, gave me a new one, taught me to show compassion and love, and gave me the privilege of being His missionary…”
- Yirel Salinas, Summer Service 2023, East Asia
How to Apply
Eligible young adults are at least one year out of High School, and not yet 24 years old as of August 1st of the year they are interviewing.
Applications begin with an interview during the week of the New Wilmington Mission Conference the summer before the intended travel. Applicants must be in attendance at the New Wilmington Mission Conference during the week they plan to interview. Those who are only attending part-time during the week of their interview should have attended a previous conference in its entirety.
During the interview, interested participants will be advised by the Summer Service Committee of the next steps in the process. Typically applicants will be asked to email the Committee Chair to request an application packet. Application packets include essay questions and faith statements, as well as request for references, a pastor’s recommendation, and a physician’s release.
Applications are to be completed and returned by September 1st. Only applications that are received in-full will be considered.
Applications are reviewed by the Summer Service Committee and selected participants are notified by telephone following the fall meeting of the NWMC Board of Managers.
Selected participants are responsible for the financial obligations of obtaining a passport, acquiring needed vaccinations, and arranging for travel to and from New Wilmington.
